Fall Cows

We saw this "cow" on the top of Flat Canyon.  She watched us and then her calf stepped out behind her.  She is a big ole Moose!

This day, I am riding Neville.  He is coming along nicely.  I am at the Public Grove Pond waiting for the boys to come with the cows.  I didn't find any along my way.

This is my favorite ride.  Mouse is big and powerful and can out-walk any horse we own.  We are headed toward Mantua with fall cows. 
This was all in one week.  I didn't take many pictures the other 2 days but I was horse back everyday this week.  The trip to Liberty is out of place because it was the Saturday after this long week.  Thankfully, my stitches are healing and I am feeling great again!

Dudrfee to Sink Hole

On Saturday, Ty our hired man and I went to Liberty to get cattle that were out.  Hopefully, this is the last trip!  On the way there we saw this hot air balloon just hovering.

We had to go to the neighbor's place to get to the cows and this little burrow insisted on following us.  He was cute but he scared the cattle to death. 

The canyon we had to get the cattle out of was very brushy and rocky.  We wanted to drive the cattle 1 mile down hill to the place to load them, but no, they didn't want to go that way at all!

So, we I mean I ended up following them all the way to Sink Hole.  It took me 4 hours to get there and we covered about 12 miles.  It was a beautiful day and a nice ride.  Ty had to drive the truck up the hill and wait for me to arrive.

 

This is a no-till-drill we are borrowing to plant some grass-again- on the west end of Sink Hole.

Young Women in Excellence

It was Young Women in Excellence on Sunday.  Sierra said she was 18 now ad didn't need to participate but then she changed her mind when I printed her picture and name card.  She did so good!

Savanna did very well too.  Her value was Integrity and she chose to use the tennis team as her project.

The theme this year was:  In The Strength Of The Lord, I Can Do All Things.  We had worked on doing "hard things"  all summer like reading the Book of Mormon in 100 days, finding 1 name that needed temple work, finding an ancestor to get to know, walking 9 miles to the temple and making their wardrobe more modest.

We used table covers the colors of the value colors and then we used black and white pictures of the girls as the center pieces.  The girls each talked about their projects and how it fit into the theme.  They were amazing.  They make me nervous because they don't get in a hurry to decide and get things put together but thankfully, it came together very well!

For Sierra's 18th birthday we went to Sizzler and then the girls had a piano recital to  go to. 
The next day Sierra had a party with her friends at the civic center.  They had a great time.  At least it looked like they were.  They danced and played games and sat around talking and watched a movie and just had fun.

I can't believe she is 18!

Stitches

Well, I did it again.  For the second time in a month I had to visit the Insta-Care.  I have made it through most of my life without much incident but lately I am feeling accident prone. 
I did a dumb thing. 
I walked behind Skip, our paint horse, and spooked him and he kicked me.  He was tired because we had ridden all day and he was stirred up because we had a semi there loading a cherry-picker used to put up our new hay barn (another post) and that is the only excuse that I have.

 There are about 12 stitches on top and 20 underneath.  I didn't realize how bad it was because it went numb immediately.  I was able to help Alma load some steers and unsaddle the horses before I had a look and realized I might need a stitch.  I drove to my mom's house and she took me home and then the girls took me in--dirty and smelly-again just like the last time I went to the Insta-care.

The girls and I decided to go to Logan Canyon and hike the Crimson trail.  Bryan was shipping yearlings and we had a couple hours to ourselves.  It was a beautiful day and a beautiful hike!  I had never been up there and it was amazing!  It was a little steep but not too bad.   Before we started, Savanna said "I know how we can make this fun!" (she is a non-hiker we learned) "Lets each take pictures"  I thought it was going to be fun just to be hiking together on a great day. ( I must be losing touch.)  We each had a camera and off we went.  First of all was crimson.  I chose the red leaf and Sierra chose the berries, Savanna didn't take one.  Another category was wildlife.  Mine was the Praying Mantis, Sierra the caterpillar, and Savanna the big bee. I know they aren't the typical wildlife but it was all we saw. 
 This trail overlooks the highway and the river.  It starts at Spring Hollow and goes about 4 miles to the next campground.  My suggestion:  Leave a car at the next campground!

Cow vs. Cattleguard

This is what happens when a cow decides to run across the cattle guard.  She was definitely one of our more wild cows.  To get her moving after we had her legs out, Alma stood in front of her and she tried to chase him. 

Alma brought the torch and the welder up.  He cut this chunk and another one like it to get her leg free.

She wasn't one bit happy to be tied to the post, but we had to keep her close so we could haul her home.

After she was free, Alma welded the pieces back together.
 I was along to hold the rope, bate the cow, and put the flames out from the torch so that it didn't  burn the cows hair.
Another exciting day on the ranch.
I love my job!
