Food Storage

For Stake Relief Society Conference, we learned about how to use and buy food storage.
Leisa Card came and spoke to us and she has written a book called "I Dare You To Eat It."
She had such practical advice that it made it seem so easy!
It was motivating to get things cleaned out and rotated here at my house.
She had this recipe above and we had it for lunch.  It had the wheat berries that you make from cooking wheat on low in a crock pot overnight.  I have only ever wheat berries for cereal but it adds a nice texture to this salsa-like recipe.  She taught us that the wheat berries can be frozen and then microwaved and added to any dish that calls for hamburger to make it go further.

This wheat is some I have had stored for twenty years in the basement--Don't tell Bryan, it isn't fresh!

These are my wheat berries all ready to go in the freezer.

Some of the cans in my storage.

Young Women in Action

Colette and Mandy on the refreshment duty

Misty-the Mia Maid advisor.  She looks like one of the girls!

Vickie caught an edge skiing at Beaver this week and blew out her knee.  She is hoping it will heal without surgery, but she is on crutches for a month!
The kids at the school cross will miss their favorite crossing guard!

Ginger taught the girls how to take care of their nails and she helped polish a few of them too.
Lexie, Teresa, Katelyn, and Lindie is visiting with Mandie

Kiersten and Mady
They were more interested in arm wrestling the polishing nails.  The cute headband each of them is wearing is actually two braids of their own hair, that are pinned above their ear.  It is so cute.

The ever exciting Abby!
Lexie

Trista and the many shades of her nails.

I should know better than this.
I was trying to find a way to cheat and win, but he couldn't lose in front of this audience of girls!  He was a good sport and let me get a little ahead of him before he beat me.
Thanks, Dillon

I think Emily was pulling Savanna's hair.

Sun Dog

The girls and I were headed to Ogden to do a little shopping and we saw this cool sun dog.  It was huge!  Sure enough, it snowed two days later.

Aunt MaryAnn Scrubbies

These are the best little scrubbies.
They are great to use to wash dishes, the tub, scrud off the floor, and anything else that shouldn't be stuck onto your surface.  I gave the pattern to my favorite Aunt and she went to town.  We now have them in assorted colors and sizes.  It is fun to go to her house and get a new fresh one.  The funny thing is that I never made one.  I didn't have the net or the time or whatever my excuse was.
Well, I was looking for a small project and I found the pattern.  I bought the net or tulle (the stiff kind) for $1.25 a yard and cut it into 2-3/4 inch strips.

It works up really well. It isn't any harder than yarn

It takes the rough spots off my fingers as I made it.  I wouldn't recommend signing up to make 20 of them at a time-- you may not have any hide left on  your fingers.

Taste of Summer

I found these little gems at Sam's and they actually tasted like the little tomatoes I grew in my garden!  I think I ate most of them just plain, but a few made it onto my sandwich and in a pasta dish we had for dinner.  They brightened up my whole day.
Simple pleasures.

Sashay Scarf

My friend, Sherleen, had the cutest scarf Sunday at Church so I ask her about it and her sister Kate made it for her so I talked to Kate and she said she learned on You Tube!  Well, the tech age helped us remember and use the skills our grandma taught us!
  Who knew?

So, the "yarn" looks like shoe lace at first.

After it is opened up it looks like this.

There are these little "tracks" on the top edge and you put every other one on a hook.

When you get ten tracks on your hook, you pull the last one through them all.

It looks like this little ruffle.  I used a little more than half the ball to make this scarf and it matched my sweater perfectly!

Ring

Savanna went swimming with friends and had a great time, but her mood ring that a cute boy gave her wouldn't stay on so she put it on another finger-a bigger finger.  It wouldn't come off.  We tried soap, butter, cold water soaking and it wouldn't budge.  Her finger wasn't turning colors so we went to bed with thoughts of going to the doctor in the morning.  When she woke up nothing had changed except her finger was a bit swollen from all the roughing it up so we called Alma to see if he thought that he could cut it off with side cutters or something.  He said it would hurt but he would give it a try.  Savanna was already nervous about the doctor so she agreed.  He brought his tools and my needle nose pliers and cut it right off!  Better yet, it didn't hurt--too much.  Her finger had a nice "ring" around it all day, but she was no worse for the wear!
